Prepare Thy Mindset for the Holidays
Audio Version (1:53)
This is the time of year when we have time off work but the holiday season seems to keep us busier. It is an important part of the year because you either keep your fitness momentum or fall into a two-month or longer hole. But here’s what’s nice, you don’t have to choose between enjoying the holidays or staying committed to your fitness. Don’t think it’s all-or-nothing, this is a great exercise in balancing fun and fitness.
Here’s how you can train your mindset to make the best of your holidays:
- Enjoy it to the max. This is family time, good food, and memories. Don’t spend the holidays stressed about macros or feeling guilty about dessert. That’s not mental toughness, that’s missing the point. Celebrate any positive experience as a win.
- Move your body. You don’t need a full training session. A 5-minute walk around dinner, 10 minutes of foam rolling and mobility, or even a quick strength session of your favorite exercises in the morning keeps momentum without derailing your day. Movement also helps digestion and keeps you feeling sharp.
- Commit to what matters. If you’ve built a routine that’s working, protect the non-negotiables, but allow yourself to be flexible with the rest.
- Stay social and present. This time is rare. Be there with your people, not thinking about what you “should” be doing. If you have family members or friends where tension exists, focus on the better memories of being together, ask why they think the way they do without judging, be respectful, kill them with kindness, and change the subject if needed.
- Bounce Back. As soon as you can, get back into your normal or desired fitness routine.
The holidays don’t reset your progress. One week or so off doesn’t erase months of work. But staying engaged, even lightly, keeps you in the athlete mindset instead of letting it slip away.
Train smart. Enjoy life. Recover from the stresses of work and life and come back stronger.
