Common Training Pitfalls

Here are the most common things I notice keeping people from getting better results (it’s okay, we all do it).

Exercise Pitfalls (in the gym)

  • Not following a program
  • Not tracking progress
  • Not lifting
  • Only lifting
  • Focusing more on abs, arms, machines, and cardio instead of training larger muscle groups
  • Using only light weights and higher reps (over 10)
  • Not foam rolling before and after
  • Not learning proper form
  • Ignoring pain and skipping mobility exercises
  • Not doing ramp up sets when lifting heavy
  • Training beyond soreness
  • Training alone and without accountability
  • Not resting long enough between sets or blowing through exercises too fast
  • Training without intention

Mindset Pitfalls (mental game)

  • Using the scale and the mirror to measure progress
  • Doing what you’ve always done (unless it’s working)
  • Not finding joy in the process
  • Comparing yourself to others
  • No clear goals

Lifestyle Pitfalls (outside the gym)

  • Inconsistent training schedule
  • Not protecting your workout time
  • Ignoring how powerful good sleep is
  • Skipping meals and undereating
  • Overeating at night
  • Not drinking enough water

Take Action

  • Pick one pitfall to fix and don’t try to fix everything at once (that’s another pitfall)

Alrighty then, I’ve warned you about falling in the pit. Now, if you fall into it, I’ll help you out.
